The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) said it is open to proposals to impose stricter rules on online gambling, as government agencies and lawmakers raise concerns about its social and economic impact.

Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian recently filed a bill seeking to ban the use of e-wallets for online gambling. In a statement, Pagcor acknowledged the senator’s move, saying it is his prerogative to propose laws he believes are good for the public.

Pagcor, a government-owned and controlled corporation (GOCC) responsible for regulating, operating, authorizing, and licensing gambling, casinos, and other gaming activities in the country, also assured the public that it remains “fully committed” to working with other agencies and groups to curb illegal online gaming.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and Akbayan Partylist have also taken separate steps to address the risks linked to online gambling, which they said negatively affect many Filipinos, especially those from low-income sectors.

In a statement, the BSP said it plans to release a circular requiring BSP-supervised institutions, including banks and e-money issuers, to apply stronger safeguards for users of their digital platforms.
