The Samal Solar Renewable Energy Project has entered its commissioning phase, marking the start of economic, social, and environmental benefits for Barangays Gugo and San Juan in Samal, Bataan.
The Department of Energy (DOE) and Samal Solar Renewable Energy Corp. formally commissioned the plant as part of efforts to raise the country’s renewable energy share to 35% of the power mix by 2030.
“This solar project is a testament to the transformative power of renewable energy,” said Energy Assistant Secretary Mylene Capongcol. “It not only provides clean power but also fuels local development through employment and capacity building. This is the kind of sustainable, inclusive progress we are working to achieve nationwide.”
The facility, which began construction in 2024, now supplies 41.92 megawatts of clean and reliable electricity to the Luzon grid. The DOE said the project strengthens energy security while supporting the country’s transition to a low-carbon future.
As of April 2025, the Philippines has 1,392 active renewable energy contracts, with a total installed capacity of 7.05 gigawatts. Solar energy accounts for 515 of those contracts, contributing 2.56 gigawatts to the total capacity.
