The Philippines is becoming a key player in the global healthcare outsourcing industry, with more than 200,000 remote professionals providing services such as clinical documentation, medical billing, and telehealth. Fintech company Payoneer is helping address one of the sector’s biggest challenges: managing cross-border payments.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) reported that the country is moving beyond traditional business process outsourcing toward high-value knowledge services like Healthcare Information Management Services (HIMS). The HIMS sector generated $4.2 billion in revenue in 2024 and is expected to grow by 9% annually until 2028.

“The Philippines is becoming a global health technology outsourcing powerhouse, thanks to its skilled workforce, strong compliance standards, and cost-effective operations,” said Monique Avilla, senior director of Customer Success for Asia-Pacific at Payoneer.

North America drives much of this demand, accounting for 75%-80% of the Philippine HIMS market. Worldwide, the medical billing outsourcing segment is projected to reach $30.2 billion by 2030, while telehealth is forecast to hit $455 billion, creating opportunities for Filipino professionals to expand their role in the industry.

Global Medical Virtual Assistants (GMVA), which links US-based healthcare providers with Filipino remote professionals, has seen the impact of payment challenges. Before partnering with Payoneer, the company faced high transaction fees and balance requirements, which strained both the business and its workers.

“You shouldn’t have to work to get your money when you’re working. Our people need to focus on their patients, not on whether they’ll receive their money on time,” said Michelle DiClemente, accounting manager at GMVA.

Payoneer’s multi-currency accounts allow healthcare professionals to receive payments from international clients, withdraw earnings locally, and access funds faster. This helps companies like GMVA support cross-border healthcare services while ensuring reliable pay for their workforce.
