Two teams from the Philippine contingent secured spots in the Top 5 among 1,348 finalists at the Global Trend Micro AI hackathon, held recently in Japan. Their 4th and 5th placements underscored the country’s pursuit of strengthening its cybersecurity industry.
“They truly embody Trend Micro’s motto of being ‘Engineered To Do Good,’ utilizing their skills and expertise to not only establish the Philippines as a key player in AI-powered cybersecurity but to also lend their knowledge and expertise to continuously improve our security solutions and better fight against cybercrime,” said Manuel Gatbunton, research manager, Threat and Data Science at Trend Micro, and PH lead for the AI hackathon.
The Filipino delegation comprised engineers from diverse backgrounds across the country. Among the winners were graduates from institutions like PUP Manila, Saint Louis University, and Divine World College of Legazpi.

Trend Micro initiated the global AI Hackathon to deepen AI technology understanding and expertise. As a key player in AI and machine learning for cybersecurity, the company aimed to foster creativity among its employees, encouraging innovation in AI technology utilization.
