The advent of AI sparked debates on its impact on society, with Robert McArdle, director FTR – Cybercrime Research at Trend Micro, noting its dual potential for good and malicious use. Criminal networks actively delve into AI, empowering even new threat actors to ascend the criminal ladder. However, cybersecurity entities are leveraging AI to counteract these evolving threats swiftly.

While biometrics initially promised secure alternatives to passwords, their widespread use online poses serious risks. Stolen biometric data opens doors for threat actors to access sensitive personal information. Users face a dilemma in balancing convenience with the risk of identity theft, emphasizing the importance of scrutinizing apps and services for robust security measures.

A case study highlighted the repercussions of an outdated security system in an organization, resulting in a 21-day undetected ransomware attack, according to Trend Micro. Regular software updates act as vital shields against evolving threats, yet user negligence in updating devices and applications renders these defenses ineffective.

McArdle’s keynote on cybersecurity trends underscored the evolution of cyber threats, shifting from basic scams to sophisticated, frequent breaches affecting global institutions. The rapid frequency of these incidents calls for proactive measures, leveraging predictive reports like Trend Micro’s Mid-year Cybersecurity Threat Report to pre-emptively counter emerging threats.
