PLDT Inc. (PLDT) and Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) are expanding their electronic waste (e-waste) program to help more communities properly dispose of old and broken electronics. The move aims to address growing calls for accessible and reliable e-waste disposal.

E-waste includes discarded electronic devices such as mobile phones, computers, tablets, and routers. According to the Global E-waste Monitor 2024 report, the Philippines is the third-largest e-waste producer in Southeast Asia, generating about 540 million kilograms.

“While PLDT and Smart are not direct manufacturers of electronics, we acknowledge that our services and network upgrades contribute to e-waste generation,” said Melissa Vergel de Dios, PLDT and Smart’s chief sustainability officer. “We have made it part of our business to help recover and dispose of consumer e-waste properly.”

The company has received requests from customers asking how to dispose of old devices properly.

Building responsible e-waste management systems

The company has received requests from customers asking how to dispose of old devices properly.

“Our customer communities often ask about setting up e-waste collection activities. Seeing this need, we are helping them build responsible e-waste management systems,” said Jacqueline Bocalan, VP at Smart.

Since launching the “Be Kind. Recycle.” program in July 2023, PLDT and Smart have set up nearly 180 e-waste collection sites. Bins have been placed in 37 retail stores, three Robinsons Malls, Makati Medical Center, and over 80 SM Supermalls nationwide. They have also partnered with schools such as National University and San Beda University to involve students.

PLDT and Smart plan to expand further in 2025 and improve collection processes with partner facilities. Organizations interested in collaborating can contact sustainability@pldt.com.ph.
