Telecommunications firms PLDT and Smart have launched an artificial intelligence (AI) workshop to help persons with disabilities use digital tools and improve access to technology. The initiative is part of the PLDT Group’s efforts to reduce inequality and bridge the digital divide.
“Technology is the great equalizer,” said Stephanie Orlino, AVP and head of Stakeholder Engagement at PLDT and Smart. “Through AI, we’re creating a future where persons in challenging circumstances can participate in a digitally powered economy, and where ‘all are included.’”
The workshop was held in partnership with ATRIEV (Adaptive Technology for Rehabilitation, Integration, and Empowerment of the Visually Impaired), which develops ICT-based solutions for persons with disabilities and related stakeholders.
“Assistive technology can open doors for persons with disabilities,” said Carolina Sam, chief of operations at ATRIEV. “AI can boost independence in daily activities and improve communication between learners with disabilities and their teachers or carers.”
The event marked the 14th Global Accessibility Awareness Day and featured a hands-on training session for trainers. Participants included special needs education (SNED) teachers from the Department of Education in Makati, Taguig City, and Pateros, as well as representatives from the National Commission on Disability Affairs, Resources for the Blind, and Parents, Advocates for Visually Impaired Children.
Attendees tried AI tools such as ChatGPT, “Seeing AI,” Live Transcribe, Speech Assistant AAC, and voice-activated smart speakers. The applications demonstrated ways to help with writing, translating, identifying objects, and improving communication.
“These intuitive digital applications can help our SNED teachers choose the right tools to communicate more effectively with their students,” said Dr. Osarlo Cantos, district supervisor and SNED coordinator at DepEd Makati.
PLDT and Smart have worked with ATRIEV for two years to train and digitally upskill persons with disabilities, many of whom have since found jobs or started businesses.
