Telecommunications company PLDT Inc. (PLDT) has successfully tested the 50G Passive Optical Networks (50GPON), marking a significant leap in the technology in the country.
This advancement is crucial for PLDT’s widespread fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) service nationwide. The 50GPON technology enables PLDT to offer 50 Gigabits per second (Gbps) speed for each equipment port, dwarfing the capabilities of current technologies like GPON (2.5 Gbps) and XGS PON (10 Gbps).

“While we have been offering boosted speeds to our customers even before the pandemic, this new technology further ensures that we can provide the best and fastest service to homes nationwide,” said Eric Santiago, Head of Network at PLDT and Smart.
By September 2023, the PLDT Group had significantly expanded its total fiber footprint, spanning over 1.1 million cable kilometers. This includes more than 0.2 million cable kilometers of international fiber and approximately 0.9 million cable kilometers of domestic fiber. According to PLDT, its network has reached over 17.3 million homes across 69% of the country’s municipalities/towns, with a total of 6.15 million fiber ports covering over 18,000 barangays nationwide.
