To strengthen police work and public trust, newly minted Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III shared plans to use science and technology in law enforcement.

Speaking at a press briefing, Torre said his leadership will focus on four key areas, one of which is modernizing the police force through the use of forensics, drones, and body cameras.

“Science will now play a more active role in our policing,” Torre said.

He explained that forensic tools will be important in collecting and using evidence, as science-based findings will now be prioritized in investigations. Torre also mentioned how the PNP is already using technology in the field.

“Our body cameras are being used live on the ground by our officers, along with many other tools,” he said.

In a radio interview over DZBB, the PNP chief said they have around 600 body cameras at the moment. PNP is aiming for 4,000-5,000 body cameras for the police force.

Drone patrols return

Torre announced that drone patrols are being brought back to improve monitoring and security operations. This modernization effort, he said, is part of his plan to improve the police force’s credibility, responsiveness, and use of technology.

“We are committed to making these changes so that the PNP becomes more effective and earns the trust of the people,” he said.
