More young Filipinos are delaying moving out of their parents’ homes due to increasing housing costs and the overall cost of living, according to a study by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS). Still, some are taking the step toward independence, whether renting their first apartment or gradually setting up their own home. Experts suggest starting small, being mindful of expenses, and focusing on essentials.

Here are five practical steps for those beginning to live on their own:

1. Choose an internet plan that fits your needs and budget
A reliable internet connection is often the first thing renters check. Long-term contracts and hidden fees can make short leases tricky. Red Fiber recently introduced fiber broadband plans without lock-in periods. Options include Plan 1000 (up to 100 Mbps), Plan 1400 (up to 300 Mbps), and Plan 1900 (up to 500 Mbps). Installation fees are discounted by 50% until Dec. 31, 2025.

2. Focus on essential furniture and appliances
Set up the basics first, such as a bed, dining table, and key appliances. Extras and decorative items can be added later. Prioritizing functional items helps manage the budget while ensuring a comfortable home.

3. Use affordable or DIY solutions for decor and storage
Young adults can save money by using secondhand furniture, surplus store finds, or online marketplaces. Simple DIY projects like painting wall art or building storage solutions can make a space feel personal without high costs.

4. Pick practical technology over trendy gadgets
Start with devices that improve daily life, such as energy-efficient air conditioners, reliable rice cookers, and durable laptops. Smart home gadgets or high-end appliances can be considered later once the basics are in place.

5. Balance current enjoyment with future planning
Being budget-conscious doesn’t mean giving up comfort. Spending wisely allows renters to enjoy independence while preparing for long-term stability. Simple living and gradual upgrades can make a new home both functional and enjoyable.

Moving out is more than just setting up a space, it’s also about learning independence while staying financially aware. Thoughtful planning, careful spending, and prioritizing essentials can help young adults transition smoothly into living on their own.
