RELX | Reed Elsevier is expanding its artificial intelligence (AI) and digital operations in the Philippines as the global information and analytics company marks 15 years in the country with more than 6,200 employees across multiple cities.

The company, known globally through brands such as LexisNexis, Reed Elsevier, RELX, and LexisNexis Risk Solutions, said AI is reshaping how work is done across industries including legal services, healthcare, aviation, insurance, and financial services.

“What we’re really seeing is the true fusion of professional knowledge and technical or development knowledge,” said Mark Lwin, managing director of Reed Elsevier. “There’s going to be continuous change in terms of both roles, as well as customer expectations.”

Lwin said the company originally entered the Philippines 15 years ago as an “experiment” with only two teams. Since then, the business has grown far beyond expectations.

“We outgrew our business plan by 15 times over a 15-year period,” Lwin said.

Today, RELX | Reed Elsevier operates major offices in Quezon City and Iloilo, plus satellite offices in Alabang, Cebu, and Davao. The company is also studying expansion into two or three more Philippine cities to access a wider talent pool.

AI and generative AI are now driving the company’s next phase of growth, according to Lwin. He said the technology is changing jobs faster than previous waves of automation, but it is also creating demand for new skills and new roles.

“AI will impact all of our roles, including mine as managing director,” Lwin said. “But it also means there’s higher demand for new capabilities and skills.”

Instead of replacing workers entirely, the company sees AI as a tool that works alongside employees. Lwin said professionals are increasingly becoming “human in the loop” experts who guide AI systems while also helping develop new AI-powered tools and digital agents.

The company said it continues to invest heavily in upskilling and reskilling Filipino employees to prepare them for AI-driven work environments.

“Our focus is on career stability for the long term,” Lwin said. “As long as we’re investing in upskilling people and helping them manage through that change, that’s healthy.”

RELX | Reed Elsevier supports customers in about 75 countries, with Philippine teams mainly serving North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific markets.

Lwin also highlighted the role of Filipino professionals in the company’s global operations, calling local talent a “strategic advantage” because of their technical expertise, industry knowledge, and customer engagement skills.

“The capabilities of AI can really boost an organization that knows how to use it ethically and responsibly,” Lwin said.
