Smart Communications Inc. is expanding its mobile network in La Trinidad, Benguet, adding new infrastructure to improve connectivity in one of the country’s largest vegetable trading hubs.
The mobile services provider recently signed an agreement with the local government to build additional network facilities in strategic areas across the municipality. Smart has also deployed a portable mobile cellular site in La Trinidad’s central business district to increase network capacity and improve mobile services while permanent facilities are being developed.
The expansion is expected to support businesses, farmers, students, and government offices that rely on mobile connectivity for daily operations.
For local enterprises, stronger mobile coverage can make it easier to accept digital payments, communicate with customers and suppliers, promote products online, and manage day-to-day business activities. Better connectivity can also help the local government deliver faster public services.
“Additional sites will help improve our coverage in La Trinidad and provide residents with more reliable service,” said Debbie Hu, FVP for Network Build and Implementation, Smart.
La Trinidad serves as the trading center for Benguet, one of the country’s biggest producers of highland vegetables such as cabbage and potatoes. The Cordillera Administrative Region supplies around 70% of the Philippines’ temperate vegetables, with produce from La Trinidad reaching markets from Batanes to Mindanao.
The municipality is also home to Benguet State University, whose Teacher Education program has been designated a Center of Excellence by the Commission on Higher Education, while its Agriculture and Nutrition and Dietetics programs are recognized as Centers of Development.
“These improvements will help our constituents stay better connected,” said La Trinidad Mayor Roderick Awingan. “Our students can access information more easily, our business owners can transact more efficiently, and our people can stay connected and get the information they need.”
