PLDT’s wireless unit, Smart Communications Inc. (Smart), has become the first telecommunications provider in the Philippines to receive the GSMA Open Gateway API certification for Number Verification. The certification, achieved in collaboration with PLDT Enterprise, allows businesses to integrate secure and efficient authentication solutions into their digital platforms.

“We are committed to helping businesses deliver secure and seamless experiences for their mobile app users,” said Jojo Gendrano, senior vice president and head of Enterprise Business Group at PLDT and Smart. “The GSMA Open Gateway-certified API, starting with Number Verification, paves the way for accelerated adoption of next-generation authentication solutions.”

The certification aligns Smart and PLDT Enterprise with global standards, ensuring that industries such as banking, e-commerce, and fintech can adopt secure and scalable verification systems. These solutions help protect users from fraud while improving authentication processes.

As online threats continue to grow, businesses are prioritizing digital security. The GSMA Open Gateway certification allows Smart to provide secure network APIs that enhance authentication and fraud prevention. In the future, these APIs could also support location-based services and network quality adjustments.

Smart’s Open Gateway-certified Number Verification API builds on its Silent Authentication initiatives, which introduced alternatives to traditional passwords and One-Time Pins (OTPs). The goal is to make authentication seamless and fraud-resistant, improving user experience and security.

The GSMA Open Gateway initiative, developed with the Camara open-source project under the Linux Foundation, ensures that network APIs are standardized and secure. By adopting these global standards, Smart and PLDT Enterprise are strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure.
