PLDT Inc’s wireless subsidiary, Smart Communications Inc. (Smart), recorded an 11% year-on-year increase in mobile data revenues for the first quarter, driven by higher mobile data usage.
PLDT’s individual wireless segment achieved mobile data revenues of P18.8 billion, making up nearly 90% of the total P21.1 billion individual wireless revenues for the first three months of 2024.
“Despite the heat index, hybrid work, and other macroeconomic factors leading to somewhat muted demand, the rise of live-streaming and social media platforms like TikTok has spurred increased data usage on Smart’s network,” said Alex Caeg, head of Consumer Wireless Business at Smart.
He emphasized the need for continuous innovation to remain relevant to customers.
Caeg noted that customer usage patterns are closely monitored to adjust the network for optimal value and customer experience. He anticipates further growth in data consumption as more 5G-enabled devices connect to Smart’s network.
“With handset prices nearing an attractive point for the mass market, we are pushing for greater 5G adoption by making the latest devices more accessible to our subscribers, enabling the evolving digital lifestyles of our customers,” he said.
By the end of March 2024, Smart’s mobile network covered 97% of the population, forming part of the country’s largest integrated network, which includes PLDT’s 1.1 million kilometer fiber infrastructure.
