Smart Communications Inc. (Smart), the wireless unit of PLDT Inc., is set to intensify its 4G/LTE and 5G network rollout in the Philippines throughout 2024. This initiative comes in response to the growing demand for mobile data across the country, driven by an increasing number of 5G-capable devices entering the market.

As more affordable 5G smartphones become available, Smart anticipates continued growth in 5G adoption. This trend is expected to boost the company’s Individual Business segment, which reported revenues of P41.9 billion in the first half of the year. At present, mobile data revenues constitute 89% of the company’s total Individual Wireless revenues.

“Increasingly, data users, including gamers, are beginning to appreciate the power of 5G,” said Alex Caeg, head of Consumer Wireless Business at Smart.

To facilitate 5G adoption, Smart is offering device financing options through various bank partners.

“We are focusing on establishing a robust 5G network in key areas,” said Kristine Go, senior vice president for Smart Consumer Wireless Business. “We are leveraging the growing availability of 5G devices, both high-end and affordable as we aim to offer premium benefits to subscribers using the 5G network,” Go said.
