The action-packed thriller “The Night Agent” has claimed the top spot as the most-watched show on Netflix in the first half of this year, raking in 800,000 viewing hours worldwide, according to the streaming giant’s public release of its viewership data.
Netflix’s revelation of its list, titled “What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report,” marks a significant departure from its longstanding practice of closely guarding such statistics. Covering 18,000 titles and nearly 100 billion hours of viewing for the initial six months of 2023, this report marks a substantial step toward transparency. Each title’s global availability is detailed, enabling viewers to compare their preferences with those of audiences worldwide.
The report stated that over 60% of Netflix’s titles released between January and June 2023 found their way onto the weekly Top 10 lists.

While Netflix acknowledges the importance of these statistics, it emphasizes that viewership numbers shouldn’t solely measure the success of a show or film on its platform.
Paying subscribers
“It’s about whether a movie or TV show captivated its audience — and the scale of that audience relative to the title’s economics,” the company stated in its media release.
Netflix faced challenges due to the emergence of new streaming services backed by major production companies. To retain or regain subscribers, it experimented with various business models, including an ad-supported feature. The company implemented tighter restrictions on account access, limiting it to shared households only, after instances of widespread password sharing among subscribers impacted its operations.
Despite these challenges, Statista reports that Netflix maintains its lead as the most preferred streaming service among paying subscribers in the United States, with Amazon Prime Video following closely behind.
