Visa, a global payments processor, highlights how the payment landscape in the Philippines is evolving in 2025. The shift includes smarter e-commerce options, connected business payments, and advanced security measures, all designed to enhance consumer trust and convenience.
Filipino shoppers increasingly embrace global e-commerce, with cross-border shopping gaining traction. According to Visa’s Green Shoots Radar Survey, 32% of Filipino consumers shopped on international platforms in 2024, up from 27% the year before. About 1 in 5 makes monthly purchases from overseas retailers. Technologies like video commerce are expected to make this experience more interactive, offering seamless integration of shopping and entertainment.
“Cross-border e-commerce is opening doors for Filipinos to explore global retail opportunities,” said Jeffrey Navarro, country manager for Visa in the Philippines.
He emphasized Visa’s role in ensuring transactions are smooth and accessible for all.
For Filipino businesses, connected commerce is transforming B2B payments. Visa Direct, a real-time payment solution, simplifies cross-border transactions by supporting multiple currencies and payment methods such as debit, credit, and installment. This helps small and medium enterprises (SMEs) navigate global markets more effectively. AI-enhanced fraud prevention also bolsters trust in these transactions.
“Integrated payment systems are no longer optional but essential for businesses aiming to stay competitive,” Navarro said.
Digital security
Digital security remains a top priority as payment systems modernize. The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) reports improvements in the country’s cybersecurity ranking, underscoring efforts to close security gaps. Visa’s Consumer Authentication Service (VCAS) offers advanced tools like biometric verification and Risk-Based Authentication, making transactions secure yet user-friendly.
Generative AI is further enhancing personalization in finance, paving the way for “self-driving” financial systems that automate and optimize decisions. Visa’s $10 billion investment in AI and data infrastructure over the past decade underlines its commitment to creating secure and inclusive digital payment ecosystems.
“As the world becomes more interconnected, Visa focuses on developing solutions that empower individuals and businesses to thrive in the digital economy,” Navarro said.
