Technology company Xiaomi has opened its first overseas electric vehicle (EV) research and design center in Munich, Germany, as part of its plan to expand its global automotive footprint.

The Xiaomi EV Europe Research and Development and Design Center will handle vehicle performance projects, EV technology development, design work, and advanced research. The facility will also focus on developing products that meet international safety and quality standards.

Located in one of Europe’s key automotive hubs, the Munich center will gather engineers, designers, and researchers to work with Xiaomi EV’s global teams. The company said the center will support innovation in autonomous driving, EV platforms, and next-generation user experiences.

The move is part of Xiaomi’s “Human x Car x Home” strategy, which seeks to connect smart devices, vehicles, and home systems under a unified ecosystem.

Xiaomi said it plans to work with European research institutions and industry partners to explore smart mobility solutions and improve EV integration with existing ecosystems. The company also aims to strengthen research in areas such as infrastructure and ethical use of AI in vehicles.

The new facility supports Xiaomi EV’s broader goal to enter the European market by 2027. It follows the rollout of the company’s first EV models, the Xiaomi SU7, SU7 Ultra, and YU7, in Mainland China.
