Video streaming platform YouTube is harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to not only foster creativity but also to ensure the safety and integrity of its platform for both viewers and creators.

As the potential of generative AI (GenAI) unfolds, YouTube said it is committed to upholding its Community Guidelines, regardless of content origin, while also addressing emerging challenges and risks.

At its core, YouTube’s approach is centered on transparency and responsibility. To this end, YouTube has introduced several measures:

  1. Disclosure Policy: Creators are now required to clearly disclose when their content has been altered or synthetically created using AI tools. This measure aims to empower viewers to differentiate between authentic content and potentially misleading videos. For instance, AI-generated videos depicting events that never occurred or fabricated content featuring individuals saying or doing things they never did require clear disclosure, especially in discussions around sensitive topics like elections, conflicts, or public health crises.
  2. Removal Requests via Privacy Policy: YouTube has streamlined the process for removing AI-generated or other synthetic content that impersonates identifiable individuals, including their likeness or voice, through its privacy request mechanism. Removal decisions are made based on various factors, such as whether the content is parody, the identity of the requester, or the prominence of the individual depicted.
  3. AI-powered Content Moderation: YouTube employs a blend of human reviewers and AI technology, with AI classifiers playing a crucial role in detecting potentially violative content at scale. The continuous refinement of AI systems enhances both the speed and accuracy of content moderation, particularly in identifying emerging forms of abuse. By rapidly expanding the data AI classifiers are trained on, YouTube can swiftly identify and address harmful content while minimizing human reviewer exposure to such content.

Beyond these technical solutions, YouTube said it is committed to fostering digital literacy and critical thinking skills to combat misinformation. Initiatives such as fact-checking workshops, collaborations with content creators (like the “Mag-ingat” song with Ben&Ben), and partnerships with media literacy organizations (such as #YOUThink publication with CANVAS) exemplify YouTube’s dedication to promoting a safer and more informed online community.
