ChatGPT has launched an updated search tool, allowing users to receive fast, timely responses with web-sourced links directly within their chat experience. This feature combines the ease of a natural language interface with access to current information like sports scores, news updates, and stock quotes — data previously requiring a separate search engine.

Users can either let ChatGPT decide when to search or activate it manually by clicking the web search icon. The new feature is accessible through chatgpt.com, as well as on desktop and mobile apps. At present, ChatGPT Plus and Team users, along with those on the SearchGPT waitlist, can use this search capability. OpenAI plans to expand access to Enterprise and Edu users in the coming weeks, with a gradual rollout to Free users over the next few months.

ChatGPT’s search results now include links to source articles, allowing users to dig deeper into specific topics. This is similar to Google’s AI overview for its own Search. A “Sources” button below each response opens a sidebar displaying these references, making it easier to verify information or learn more.

OpenAI collaborated with news organizations, including the Associated Press, Condé Nast, and Reuters, to ensure the tool aligns with publisher needs. Publishers retain the choice to appear in ChatGPT search, providing flexibility in content visibility.

This upgraded search relies on a fine-tuned version of GPT-4, using advanced data-generation techniques to improve accuracy. OpenAI plans further enhancements, including expanding the search function’s applications in shopping and travel and bringing these features to more users in the future.
