Commuters can now use their debit and credit cards to pay for fares at MRT-3 stations. The new system also supports QR payments and tap-to-pay options using mobile devices or prepaid cards.
Riders can simply tap their card or phone on the turnstile to enter, eliminating the need for separate tickets or loading up stored-value cards.
The Department of Transportation (DoTr) said the move to a contactless payment system is expected to improve the experience of more than 350,000 daily MRT-3 riders, make boarding faster, and support the government’s push for more efficient and digital public transport services.
“We’re proud to bring Visa contactless payments to MRT-3 and help modernize everyday commuting for millions of Filipinos,” said Jeff Navarro, country manager, Visa Philippines. “This marks a significant step in building a more connected, cashless future for public transport in the Philippines. Through our partnership with the Department of Transportation and GCash, we’re enabling faster, safer, and more seamless journeys for commuters across Metro Manila.”

The move is part of overall support for open-loop transit systems in the country, in collaboration with digital payment providers and the Department of Transportation.
Fintech firm GCash also launched “GCash Commute,” offering various ways to pay for train rides, including QR scanning, tap-to-pay with phones, and the use of debit or credit cards, including GCash Cards.
“This isn’t just about new tech — it’s about giving commuters the ease and access to services they truly deserve,” said Martha Sazon, president and CEO of GCash (Mynt – Globe Fintech Innovations, Inc.).
