Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched a suite of solutions and services during its annual re:Invent summit with the aim of assisting organizations in accelerating their digital transformation.

To keep up with these technologies that many organizations need to operate efficiently, Phil Le-Brun, enterprise strategist at AWS, said businesses can make incremental changes instead of running big transformation programs.

“We know the most optimistic statistics tell us about 30% of those transformations succeed for a time, but then things get back to normal and they have to transform again,” said Le-Brun, who has been with AWS since 2019. “It’s really hard.”

Many organizations try to improve by launching big, sweeping programs. However, these efforts often fail to stick. Even when they succeed, the changes don’t last, and the company ends up needing another transformation later. This happens because organizations are complicated systems that grow and evolve over time, making big changes hard to sustain.

A better way is to focus on small, continuous improvements. Instead of seeing transformation as a one-time effort, businesses should treat every day as an opportunity to get better.

Culture of innovation

This approach creates a culture where innovation never stops. Even when customers say everything is perfect, companies don’t settle. By constantly looking for ways to improve, companies avoid becoming stuck and can stay ahead of the competition.

The secret to this success lies in keeping it simple. Big changes can feel overwhelming, but breaking them into smaller, everyday actions makes them manageable. When every employee feels empowered to make small improvements, those changes add up to something big. Over time, the whole organization becomes stronger and more adaptable.

This idea of keeping things simple and focused helps companies improve without creating unnecessary complexity. By encouraging employees to act every day, businesses can stay flexible, grow with their customers’ needs, and remain successful for the long term. Instead of a one-time fix, transformation becomes an ongoing process, ensuring the company is always moving forward.

Scalability and cost-efficiency

Balancing scalability and cost efficiency requires leveraging experience and innovation to drive performance, affordability, and sustainability. Organizational success in adopting technologies like AI and cloud computing depends on imaginative leadership, a willingness to embrace change, and equipping leaders with the necessary technical knowledge.

“Scalability and cost-efficiency go hand in hand (when organizations operate at scale),” Le Brun said.

LeBrun noted that when organizations address challenges strategically, they can unlock new opportunities and remain competitive in an evolving technological landscape.

LeBrun emphasized that leaders who resist change do not necessarily oppose innovation but that they are just complacent. They need to understand the primary objectives of these changes and of course, the benefits these would bring.

Successful organizations embrace change when driven by crises, leadership transitions, or proactive long-term planning.

Many leaders lack sufficient technical knowledge to maximize data and technology. He cited as an example a chief marketing officer must understand data-driven strategies like segmentation and personalization.

“Bridging this knowledge gap is essential for enabling leaders to envision and implement transformative technologies,” he said.
