Globe, in partnership with Asticom Technology Inc. and Singapore’s Transcelestial Technologies Pte Ltd., has launched a pilot of the Philippines’ first laser-based communications system.

This cutting-edge approach to connectivity promises to offer an efficient alternative to traditional fiber optics, especially in hard-to-reach areas, and aims to improve network speed for sectors like finance, business process outsourcing (BPO), and port operations.

The trial, conducted at the 55,000-seat Philippine Arena, showcased the effectiveness of Transcelestial’s Centauri device. This laser communication unit, while compact, aims to provide fiber-like speed without physical cables.

“Laser communications hold immense promise for high-speed, reliable connectivity, especially where building physical infrastructure is challenging,” said Joel Agustin, head of Service Planning and Engineering at Globe. “With Transcelestial’s innovation, we are enhancing the overall network experience for our customers.”

Asticom led the installation, deploying the Centauri devices to support Globe’s mobile Cell Site on Wheels (COW) technology. These devices established an invisible laser link, enabling high-speed data transfer.

“This project tested the reliability of Transcelestial’s laser tech as a network backhaul, highlighting its potential for seamless, high-performance connectivity,” said Marc Kerveillant, GM for Engineering at Asticom.
