Telecommunications company Globe has joined the Asia United Gateway East (AUG East) submarine cable consortium to help meet East Asia’s increasing need for high-speed, large-capacity connectivity, driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and other data-heavy technologies.

“This new data superhighway strengthens our nation’s digital backbone,” said Carl Cruz, president and CEO of Globe. “It gives businesses the scale, speed, and reliability they need to compete globally and embrace technologies that can uplift lives and drive inclusive progress for all Filipinos.”

Citing publicly available data, Gobe said that industry forecasts show traffic from AI and AI-powered applications is expected to surpass conventional internet usage by 2031. The Asia-Pacific region is also projected to continue leading global investments in generative AI and digital infrastructure.

“This investment in the AUG East cable system is a cornerstone of our long-term strategy to future-proof the Philippines’ digital infrastructure,” said Raymond Policarpio, VP and head of strategy management and business investments at Globe Business.

He added that the need for resilient and high-capacity international connectivity will keep growing as AI-enabled applications become more widespread.

The 8,900-kilometer AUG East cable will connect digital hubs Singapore and Japan, with landing points in the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, South Korea, and Taiwan.

Designed as a next-generation, high-fiber-count system, AUG East is expected to handle massive data demand and enhance network reliability, even during natural disasters. Completion is targeted for the third quarter of 2029.
