Globe has successfully tested satellite-based text messaging in Zambales, expanding connectivity to isolated areas. The trial was conducted in partnership with Lynk Global Inc. and utilized low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites to send SMS through regular mobile phones without the need for additional equipment or modifications.
The demonstration, which took place in Lake Mapanuepe, a remote area with no traditional mobile reception, showcased how Globe’s and TM SIM cards can communicate directly with Lynk’s LEO satellites. This breakthrough offers hope for providing reliable connectivity to Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs) in the Philippines, where traditional cell towers are difficult to build.
Globe’s satellite initiative aims to enhance connectivity for over 500 GIDAs in the country, opening new possibilities for communication in remote locations.
“This is a significant step in our mission to ensure that every Filipino, regardless of location, stays connected,” said Gerhard Tan, senior director and head of Technology Strategy and Innovations, Globe.
The trial demonstrated that satellite SMS can work with standard mobile devices, making it both accessible and affordable for users. Globe plans to conduct more tests in Mindanao later this month to further evaluate the technology. If successful, Globe intends to fully integrate satellite SMS into its network to reach more underserved areas.
