In response to incidents of “spoofing” on its SMS channel 8080, Globe has initiated measures to enhance customer security. Clickable links have been removed from official customer advisories to mitigate the risk of scams.
Reports of customers receiving fraudulent messages via 8080 or under the sender ID “Globe” have surfaced, urging recipients to click on fake links promising rewards such as mobile devices. Perpetrators employ illicit equipment like IMSI catchers or fake cell towers/base stations to execute this scheme. These devices, deployed on foot or in vehicles, can intercept mobile users within a limited vicinity.
“These spoofed messages make it very hard for customers to discern between a legitimate message and a scam SMS,” said Anton Bonifacio, chief information security officer, Globe. “To help them distinguish between real and fake, we are no longer adding links to our official customer advisories.”

IMSI catchers coerce phones in their proximity to revert to 2G, an older cellular network standard. Once connected to the fraudulent cell tower, users unwittingly receive SMS from spoofed numbers or sender IDs. These messages bypass Globe’s network, eluding its spam filters. By refraining from including links in SMS advisories, Globe aims to empower customers to differentiate between legitimate and counterfeit messages.
“With this step, if customers do receive an SMS with a link from 8080 or “Globe” as sender ID, they will know that it’s from spoofing, thus a fake message,” Bonifacio said.
The use of IMSI catchers presents a global threat, prompting Globe to collaborate with partners on finding solutions. This issue has escalated in the Philippines following the implementation of stringent regulations against SMS fraud, such as the SIM Registration Act.
Observing fraudsters’ shift to IMSI catchers and over-the-top (OTT) media services after the blocking of person-to-person SMS with clickable links in September 2022, Globe remains proactive. It is cooperating with law enforcement agencies to apprehend IMSI catcher operators.
