According to the International Data Corp. (IDC), the Philippine PC market encountered a setback in 2023, experiencing a 24.2% year-on-year (YoY) decline.

Despite a positive upturn in the fourth quarter, where there was a 10.5% annual increase, overall shipments for the year amounted to 1.89 million units.

“Shipments saturated in the first half of the year, reeling from low demand in the market, followed by vendors prioritizing inventory management in the second half,” said Roben Dispo, associate research analyst at IDC Philippines.

The public sector witnessed a sharp downturn in procurement during the initial six months of 2023 due to various procurement-related challenges. However, as these obstacles were addressed, the latter half of the year saw a surge in deals.

Consumer market

The private sector remained cautious in their purchases, reflecting a negative outlook that extended to the consumer market, which experienced a decline in demand aligned with slowing household spending trends.

Despite market challenges, both HP Inc. and Lenovo managed to increase their shares, particularly in the commercial segment in 2023. Acer, however, maintained its leading position with consistent demand from consumers, capturing a 26.5% market share, although slightly down from the previous year’s 27.4%. Lenovo followed with a 21.5% market share, showing a significant increase from 17.9% in the prior year. HP secured 12.8%, Asus 10.2%, and Dell 7.6%.

IDC forecasts a positive trajectory for the Philippine PC market in 2024, anticipating a rebound of 26.5%. This growth is expected to be driven primarily by the education sector, with over 490,000 laptops slated for delivery under the DepEd Computerization Program (DCP). These deals, announced since the close of last year, are poised to significantly boost shipments and stimulate market activity.

“While vendors continue to manage inventory levels cautiously amid economic uncertainties and soft demand, the surge in education-related initiatives presents a promising avenue for growth in 2024,” Dispo said.
