Nvidia has introduced the Nvidia Omniverse Cloud Sensor RTX, a suite of microservices aimed at advancing the development of autonomous machines through precise sensor simulation. This new technology will transform how data-driven systems operate, from autonomous vehicles to industrial robots and smart environments.

Sensors are crucial elements in the multibillion-dollar autonomous technology industry, providing the essential data that enables machines to understand their surroundings and make decisions.

“Developing safe and reliable autonomous machines powered by generative physical AI requires training and testing in physically based virtual worlds,” said Rev Lebaredian, VP of Omniverse and simulation technology at Nvidia. “Nvidia Omniverse Cloud Sensor RTX microservices will enable developers to easily build large-scale digital twins of factories, cities, and even Earth — helping accelerate the next wave of AI.”

With the Omniverse Cloud Sensor RTX, developers can now conduct extensive testing of sensor perception and AI (artificial intelligence) software within highly realistic virtual environments. This capability not only enhances safety but also reduces development time and costs by simulating real-world scenarios before actual deployment.

Real-world application

Leveraging Nvidia’s OpenUSD framework and cutting-edge RTX ray-tracing and neural-rendering technologies, Omniverse Cloud Sensor RTX combines real-world data with synthetic inputs from cameras, radar, and lidar to create comprehensive simulated environments. This technology allows for the testing of diverse scenarios, such as monitoring robotic arm operations, checking airport luggage carousels, and assessing the functionality of factory conveyor belts.

The release of Omniverse Cloud Sensor RTX coincides with Nvidia’s recent victory at the Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition conference’s Autonomous Grand Challenge for End-to-End Driving at Scale. Nvidia’s winning techniques can now be replicated in these high-fidelity virtual environments, enabling autonomous vehicle developers to test driving scenarios accurately before real-world application.

Foretellix and MathWorks are among the first to access Omniverse Cloud Sensor RTX for autonomous vehicle development. Sensor manufacturers can use these microservices to validate and integrate digital twins of their products in virtual settings, streamlining the prototyping process.
