Talks about blockchain, Web3, and the metaverse have taken a back seat in mainstream media, largely due to the rise of generative AI. In the Philippines, blockchain advocates are working to reignite interest by hosting the Philippine Blockchain Week on June 10-11 at the SMX Convention Center.
“The Philippine Blockchain Week has become the premier platform for driving blockchain and Web3 adoption in the country, and we are proud to have the strong support of key government agencies as well as local government units in pushing the blockchain agenda,” said Donald Lim, founding president of the Blockchain Council of the Philippines.
The event, which is expected to attract 10,000 attendees, will address topics such as decentralized finance (DeFi), gaming finance (GameFi), decentralized physical infrastructure networks (DePIN), non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs). These topics will be explored in the context of their real-world applications, including healthcare, real estate, education, commerce, retail, and supply chain logistics.
The event will also feature DECODED, the largest stage for the gaming, music, and entertainment industries to demonstrate how these sectors can serve as entry points to Web3.
Role of government in advancing blockchain
Government support remains crucial for the event’s success. Agencies such as the Department of Information and Communications Technology, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the Department of Science and Technology are backing blockchain initiatives. This support places the Philippines among the countries fostering blockchain innovation and growth.
“For mass adoption to happen, collaboration and timing are essential, and the partnerships help in creating blockchain use cases for the Philippines. We need to seamlessly integrate these ideas into accessible and relatable scenarios, demonstrating how blockchain benefits everyone,” said Janelle Barretto, co-founder of Philippine Blockchain Week.

Marvin Agustin’s FishBlock
To encourage blockchain adoption, PBW partnered with actor and entrepreneur Marvin Agustin to introduce “FishBlock,” a spin on the popular Filipino street food fish balls. The dish features recipes inspired by the three main islands of the Philippines and can be purchased using cryptocurrencies.
Launched in 2022, Philippine Blockchain Week has grown into a global event, featuring gaming, e-sports, K-Pop, innovation showcases, and competitions. The week-long gathering aims to connect blockchain enthusiasts with new ideas, creative collaborations, and practical use cases, fostering a better understanding of Web3 in the Philippines.
