In the engineering and design sectors, the persistent use of unlicensed software by large companies poses a growing risk to critical public infrastructure projects. BSA | The Software Alliance has raised concerns about the potential threats to public safety associated with the use of outdated and unsecured software. 

“Governments across the region are looking closely at the software used in public works projects, ensuring that all taxpayer-funded infrastructure projects are designed using only safe, secure, licensed software,” said Tarun Sawney, senior director, BSA.  

The use of unlicensed software exposes organizations to increased cyber threats, a concern exacerbated by the rising global cost of data breaches, reaching over $3 million in Southeast Asia in 2023. To address this issue, BSA offers a five-step plan for organizations, particularly those engaged in critical infrastructure projects, to ensure software compliance and enhance cybersecurity.

1. Prioritize Licensed Software

  • Using licensed software is not only a matter of compliance but serves as the first line of defense against cybercrime. Regular updates from licensed software providers address vulnerabilities, ensuring the latest security measures are in place.
  • Enforcing a zero-tolerance policy for unlicensed software is crucial, requiring all members to understand the associated risks. Business leaders must emphasize the role of licensed software in boosting cybersecurity.

2. Source from Legitimate Vendors

  • Purchase software from reputable sources to ensure authenticity and security. Legitimate vendors adhere to industry standards, providing regular updates and support.
  • Centralize software procurement processes to establish a standardized approach, reducing the risk of unintentional use of unauthorized or potentially harmful programs.

3. Implement Robust Asset Management

  • Conduct regular audits of software licenses to maintain accurate records and ensure compliance. Failure to do so may result in legal consequences and financial penalties.
  • Integrate AI-driven solutions into cybersecurity systems to analyze threats and enhance authentication solutions, keeping pace with evolving cyber threats.

Using unlicensed software is against the law and may lead to severe consequences, including fines and legal proceedings.
