Smart Communications, Inc., the wireless arm of PLDT Inc., has installed new LTE sites in Saint Bernard, Southern Leyte. This initiative aims to improve connectivity and support local farmers in adopting technology to enhance their livelihoods.

Saint Bernard’s farmers, primarily engaged in coconut and rice production, are expected to benefit significantly from these network upgrades. The province’s agriculture-based economy relies heavily on efficient farming practices and timely access to information.

“Technology is a game-changer for farmers in agriculture-based provinces like Southern Leyte,” Debbie Hu, first VP and head of Wireless Network at Smart, said in a media release. “With reliable connectivity, farmers can access key information such as real-time weather updates and learn modern farming techniques. By harnessing technology and digital tools, our farmers can make informed decisions, reduce losses, and increase their productivity.”

The Tambis St. Bernard Farmers Irrigators Association, the first group in the area to benefit from Smart’s FarmTech package, welcomed the initiative. The package includes essential tools such as a tablet, smartphones, SmartBro pocket WiFi, and learning materials to promote digital literacy among farmers.

“Since communication and connectivity are becoming more essential in today’s increasingly digital world, our association can benefit from this network expansion as we work toward integrating technology in our farming operations,” said Danny Balasico, president of the association.

“With these tools and the enhanced connectivity in our area, we are more motivated to train our farmer-members on how to utilize mobile devices and applications to improve our farming practices,” Balasico said.
