Smart Communications Inc. (Smart), the wireless unit of PLDT Inc., has improved its LTE coverage in Batanes as part of a move to deliver better mobile services to far-flung communities.

“This is part of our effort to improve the customer experience in far-flung areas and ensure that no Filipino is left behind in the digital age,” said Anastacio Martirez, COO of Smart.

Smart has set up an LTE network built to match Batanes’ unique geography. The province’s rugged terrain, isolated location, and scattered islands have made it difficult to install and maintain mobile infrastructure. Harsh weather also adds to the challenge. Despite these conditions, the upgraded LTE signal now supports more stable voice calls, texts, and mobile data use for residents, local government offices, and tourists.

The network improvements were rolled out as the country observes National Information and Communications Technology (NICT) Month this June. The celebration is led by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), with Batanes hosting key activities focused on bringing digital services to underserved areas.

Free data and calls for Batanes users

To mark the network upgrade, Smart is offering free data and call packages to users in Batanes. These exclusive promos cover Smart prepaid and postpaid subscribers, including TNT users. The package includes 2.5GB of data for three days, along with 25 minutes of all-network calls and 25 all-network SMS.

The offer also marks TNT’s 25th anniversary and Smart’s 34th year in service.

This initiative is Smart’s way of thanking Batanes residents for their continued support while encouraging them to try out the stronger LTE coverage.
