PLDT Inc., through its wireless arm Smart Communications Inc., has tested optical transport network (OTN) disaggregation technology at the PLDT-Smart Technolab in Makati, making it the first trial of its kind in the Philippines.
The test is part of Smart’s plan to shift to a fully disaggregated transport network, which it said would help build a more open, efficient, and flexible infrastructure to improve customer experience.
Disaggregation allows telecom operators to separate hardware and software components, enabling them to select vendors independently. This setup creates a more competitive ecosystem that can lower costs, improve service delivery, and boost innovation.
“This milestone builds on the momentum of the previous IP transport disaggregation Proof of Concept conducted in 2023 by validating Optical Transport Disaggregation technologies,” said Debbie Hu, FVP and head of wireless network at Smart. “It supports our goal of a fully disaggregated, cost-efficient network architecture and paves the way for an open, end-to-end transport infrastructure that’s future-ready, scalable, and vendor-neutral.”
Smart and PLDT have been investing in open and disaggregated systems, also exploring technologies such as Open RAN and Cloud-Native Core. The transport network, which carries data, voice, and video traffic, is a critical backbone for digital services.

“This approach not only improves service delivery and cost efficiency, but also sets the foundation for long-term transformation,” said Radames Zalameda, VP and head of wireless network strategy and architecture.
Unlike traditional systems that depend on one vendor, disaggregated networks use open, interoperable solutions from multiple providers. Hu said Smart’s modernization plan covers the entire network, while Zalameda added that the lab tests show disaggregated solutions are moving closer to operational readiness.
The company said the technology will enable faster upgrades, reduce vendor lock-in, and provide greater resilience across its network.
