PLDT Inc. and its mobile unit Smart Communications Inc. have tested a new fixed wireless access (FWA) technology that could help extend high-speed internet to areas where laying fiber lines is difficult.
The companies recently piloted the Radisys FWA system, which uses point-to-multipoint connectivity. The setup involves a single base node that can wirelessly connect to remote radio units installed in homes or buildings, delivering what PLDT described as “fiber-like” speeds without the need for cables.
“Fixed Wireless Access using Radisys technology has already been deployed successfully in large markets like India,” said Radames Zalameda, vice president and head of Wireless Network Strategy and Architecture of PLDT. “We saw a strong opportunity to adopt and tailor this proven solution for the Philippine setting, especially in areas where laying down fiber remains a challenge.”
During the pilot, PLDT recorded download speeds of 945Mbps and upload speeds of 929Mbps. The tests included streaming and browsing platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram.
The initiative was led by PLDT’s Network Strategy and Architecture team as part of the group’s ongoing efforts to explore technologies that can improve internet service, especially in underserved locations.
“This point-to-multipoint solution offers a simpler, faster way to deploy high-speed connectivity, without the need for extensive civil works. It delivers fiber-like speeds over the air, making it an ideal option in hard-to-reach or underserved areas,” said Lennart Olaivar, assistant vice president and head of the Wireless Network Strategy and Transformation Office.
