A study conducted by market research firm Nielsen for Google, which involved a meta-analysis of mixed media modeling (MMM) data, shows the growing influence of YouTube as a dominant platform in the Philippines.

According to the report, 90% of online Filipinos now engage with YouTube, with content creators and their audiences building a thriving ecosystem of digital entertainment.

“YouTube has become more than just a video-sharing platform. It has emerged as a significant player in redefining how Filipinos engage with content,” said Jackie Wang, country director for Google Philippines and Thailand. “Whether in urban areas or rural regions, across all income levels, Filipinos are tuning in to YouTube. The platform allows users to immerse themselves in diverse content, whether long-form or short-form videos.”

The study further highlighted that YouTube reached over 50 million people aged 18 and above in June 2024, equating to more than 90% of the Philippine adult population. During this period, watch time on YouTube in the Philippines grew by 15% compared to the previous year. Also, watch time for videos with “P-Pop” in the title surged by over 180%, demonstrating the platform’s capacity to boost local music genres.

Marketing opportunities

“YouTube is transforming the way brands connect with audiences in the Philippines,” Wang said. “For brands and advertisers, this is a unique opportunity.”

YouTube offers a variety of ad formats and promises to provide unparalleled engagement with viewers.

YouTube’s versatility extends beyond individual consumption to include larger, shared experiences. A growing number of Filipinos now watch YouTube on smart TVs, where viewing time has doubled over the last three years. Each viewer spends an average of four hours a day watching YouTube on TV screens, making it one of the most watched services on smart TVs in the country.

For advertisers, the platform provides innovative options like 30-second non-skippable ads and ad pauses, where brands can capture attention without interrupting the viewer’s experience.

“These formats ensure that advertisers can craft meaningful stories, delivering uninterrupted messages that resonate with the audience,” said Wang.

The data supports YouTube’s claim that it delivers “quality views,” with its engagement metrics surpassing many other digital platforms. Advertisers are seeing tangible results, as longer viewing times translate to more significant outcomes.
