Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group, is making significant innovations in artificial intelligence (AI) applications across Asia. From language models to customer interaction tools, the company’s efforts aim to transform operations in industries like technology, travel, beauty, and healthcare.
“We remain committed to helping our customers drive transformation in 2024 with our partners together,” said Selina Yuan, president of International Business at Alibaba Cloud Intelligence.
Language models tailored for Japan
In Japan, Alibaba Cloud partnered with Lightblue, a startup from the University of Tokyo, to improve its Japanese-language large language models (LLMs). Lightblue leveraged Alibaba Cloud’s architecture and Qwen LLM to refine its models, enhancing accuracy for East Asian languages.
“Alibaba Cloud’s Qwen has proven to be the best publicly available option for supporting Japanese,” said Shunichi Taniguchi, director and senior researcher at Lightblue. “By fine-tuning our LLM with Qwen, we significantly improved its accuracy.”
Revamping imaging in tourism
In Malaysia, Pictureworks, a company specializing in photography solutions, utilized Alibaba Cloud’s AI tools to improve image capture at tourist attractions. Its solutions, including the Platform for Artificial Intelligence (PAI), have been deployed at sites across Asia, including a theme park in Hong Kong.
“Alibaba Cloud’s technology has fundamentally transformed how we capture images,” said Sharon Tse, CEO of Pictureworks. “This innovation enhances the quality of our work and enriches customer experiences.”
Supporting travel innovation
In Singapore, Atlas, a travel technology provider, has used Alibaba Cloud’s infrastructure since 2021 to optimize operations. The company implemented a chatbot powered by Qwen, offering 24/7 support to travel sellers and airlines.
“Alibaba Cloud has played a key role in Atlas’s rapid expansion by offering a scalable, secure infrastructure,” said Mary Li, founder and CEO of Atlas. “Our collaboration has significantly enhanced efficiency and improved customers’ experience.”
Personalizing skincare and nutrition
Beauty and healthcare brands are also benefiting from Alibaba Cloud’s AI advancements. Drunk Elephant, a skincare brand under Shiseido, launched DRUNKGPT, a chatbot that uses Alibaba Cloud’s Qwen-max to deliver personalized skincare advice in China.
“Utilizing Alibaba Cloud’s advanced AI technologies allows us to create a more personalized and responsive experience for our customers,” said Andy Cai, brand director of Drunk Elephant China.
Meanwhile, Haleon China, a healthcare company, introduced iNutrition, an AI-driven assistant offering tailored nutritional guidance.
“By integrating Alibaba Cloud’s large model Qwen with our knowledge base, we provide personalized health advice to consumers,” said Bing Liu, digital and tech head of Haleon Greater China.
