From farming solutions to alternative sources of electricity, Filipino innovators who developed various solutions addressing real-world challenges were spotlighted at the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) PHILIPPiNEXT event held recently.
The event was held as a side program to DOST-Technology Application and Promotion Institute’s (TAPI) inaugural International Conference and Exposition on Innovations (ICE on I), in partnership with the Asian and Pacific Center for Transfer of Technology.
Alvin Phoebe Valdez developed Farmesto Technologies, a system that automates key farming tasks such as remote irrigation, climate control, and nutrient dosing. The technology aims to make farming more efficient, consistent, and less physically demanding, especially in rural areas where modernization has lagged.
Patrick Roland De Guzman created the Marissa Turbine to address the lack of reliable electricity in island communities. The device harnesses the steady flow of rivers and irrigation canals to provide a simple, affordable, and scalable energy source.
Cristina Macaraig, who worked oversears, developed Alerto PH, a community-based monitoring and safety system for Filipino homes. The technology combines modern security tools with features suited to local needs, helping families monitor their homes even when away.
To help communities respond to frequent flooding, Justin Zhang and his team created TackOne’s FloodFinder, a compact flood detection device that provides street-level water data in real time. It operates independently of the power grid and Wi-Fi, ensuring reliability during disasters.
Dr. Gary Noel Del Castillo launched SeeYouDoc, a cloud-based healthcare platform offering telemedicine, automated appointment scheduling, and secure digital records. The platform aims to make healthcare more accessible and convenient for families.
The PHILIPPiNEXT event highlighted these stories to inspire wider use of locally developed technologies and to encourage innovation that meets the needs of Filipino communities.
