Seiko Epson Corp. (Epson) has announced that, as of December 2023, every Epson Group site worldwide is powered exclusively by renewable electricity.

This makes Epson the first in the domestic manufacturing industry to complete the transition to renewable energy across all its global facilities, amounting to approximately 876 GWh of electricity annually. This ambitious move is expected to slash Epson’s yearly carbon dioxide emissions by about 400,000 tonnes.

“This will not only help us achieve our own goals but also help to facilitate a broader adoption of renewable electricity in the wider society,” said Yasunori Ogawa, global president, Epson. “Realizing social sustainability is a goal fraught with difficulties but we will act with determination to address the hurdles with a spirit of creativity and challenge.”

As part of its commitment to Environmental Vision 2050, aiming for carbon negativity and underground resource-free operations, Epson identifies the use of renewable electricity as a crucial element in its decarbonization strategy. In March 2021, Epson publicly declared its intent to shift to 100% renewable electricity for all group sites globally by 2023, a goal successfully achieved with the completion of the global switch in December 2023, following the November 2021 completion in Japan.

Beyond merely sourcing renewable electricity, Epson is committed to fostering the broader adoption of renewable energy. This involves not only generating more in-house power but also actively supporting the development of new power sources through co-creation initiatives. Epson will further reduce energy associated with production processes and products while advancing resource circulation to achieve its ultimate aim of becoming carbon-negative.

Key milestones in the transition to 100% renewable electricity at all Epson Group sites include:

  • March 2021: Publicly committed to switching to 100% renewable electricity at all sites
  • April 2021: Switch completed at all sites in its local area of Nagano Prefecture, Japan
  • November 2021: Switch completed at all sites in Japan
  • December 2023: Switch completed at all global sites

Epson believes in its philosophy of efficient, compact, and precise innovation, contributing to enriching lives and creating a better world. The company remains committed to engaging in practices aligned with this purpose, advancing toward the aspirational goal of achieving sustainability and uplifting communities alongside customers and partners.
