Ride-hailing app Grab Philippines has launched GrabTaxi Electric, an all-electric taxi service now available in parts of Metro Manila. The fleet is recognized by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and is operated in partnership with the local firm EV Taxi Corp.

Grab electric taxis are now operating in Makati, Taguig, Pasig, Mandaluyong, Parañaque, and Pasay. This rollout is part of the plan to introduce more electric vehicles (EVs) into the country’s transport system, which is still mostly made up of gas-powered vehicles.

“This is not just about offering another ride option,” said Ronald Roda, country head, Grab Philippines. “It’s about fundamentally changing the DNA of urban transport in the Philippines: one that aligns with our sustainability commitments, empowers Filipino commuters, and creates meaningful green livelihoods.”

Grab adds eco-mobility features, expands in regional cities

GrabTaxi Electric is part of the company’s plan to support greener transport through its eco-mobility strategy. This includes bringing EVs to cities like Davao and Cagayan de Oro later this year. Grab will also add sustainability options in the app, such as letting users contribute to conservation efforts.

The company is also working with government agencies and private groups to help improve EV infrastructure in the Philippines.

“Our partnership with Grab proves that when multinational platforms and local innovators work together, we can fast-track a cleaner, more inclusive future for transport — one that delivers value for both passengers and drivers alike,” said Frankie Ang, president, EV Taxi Corp.

Service in testing phase with plans for expansion

GrabTaxi Electric is currently in beta. Riders can book an electric taxi through the Transport tab in the Grab app, alongside other Grab services. The company will gather feedback from both riders and drivers to guide future improvements and expansion of the service.

The move follows a June 2024 pilot test with BYD Philippines that showed electric vehicles can be a practical choice for both fleet operators and drivers.
