Online gaming platform Roblox will start assigning age-based accounts to users under 16 beginning early June, changing how children access games, chat, and parental controls.

“With the launch of Roblox Kids and Roblox Select, we are fundamentally shifting how games are discovered on our platform. Safety isn’t a static feature; it’s a journey that evolves as a child grows,” said Matt Kaufman, chief safety officer at Roblox. “While no system is perfect, these age-adaptive accounts are designed to help remove the guesswork for parents and align users’ experiences with their age.”

The update introduces two new account types: Roblox Kids for ages 5 to 8 and Roblox Select for ages 9 to 15. For families, this means stricter content filtering, limited communication, and more control for parents.

For younger users, Roblox Kids accounts will only show games rated Minimal or Mild, and chat is turned off by default. This reduces exposure to strangers and limits interaction risks.

Users aged 9 to 15 under Roblox Select accounts can access more games, including those rated Moderate, but still within a filtered catalog. Their chat settings remain the same, although parents can manage them.

Accounts will automatically update as users grow older, moving from Kids to Select at age 9, and to a standard Roblox account at 16.

Users who do not complete Roblox’s age verification system will face tighter limits, including access only to basic-rated games and no communication features. Roblox said over 50% of its global daily active users and 65% in the United States have already completed age checks.

Parents will also gain more tools. They can block specific games until a child turns 15, manage direct chat settings, and approve access to certain games that are not included by default. They can also see what games their child plays and who they interact with.

Roblox is also tightening how games are approved for younger users. Only verified developers can be included, and games are continuously reviewed using AI, user reports, and player behavior data. Games with sensitive themes, open social spaces, or free-form content are excluded by default.

Later this year, Roblox will adopt global age ratings from the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC), which powers systems like ESRB and PEGI, to help parents better understand game content.

For everyday users, the change means younger players will see safer, more limited content, while parents get more visibility and control over how their children use Roblox.
