Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) unveiled its latest addition to the Voorhees Computing Center: the IBM Quantum System One. Situated on the campus just outside Albany, New York, this installation marks the first time an IBM quantum computer has found its home on a university campus.

Powered by IBM Quantum’s 127-qubit Eagle processor, the new quantum computer represents a leap forward in quantum computing capabilities. Demonstrating its potential last year, researchers showcased its ability to perform calculations beyond the scope of classical simulation methods, effectively ushering in the era of quantum utility.

“It is fundamental that IBM works with our global ecosystem of partners, including world-renowned universities and research institutions such as RPI, to discover and map new algorithms to the most difficult challenges that quantum computers can solve,” Darío Gil, director at IBM Research and board member at  RPI. “We will do this by fostering a quantum workforce of the future and ensuring that the next generation is equipped with the skills to use these systems to their fullest potential.”

With the system now online and operational, RPI’s network of researchers, students, and partner organizations will have dedicated access to a platform for delving into complex problems spanning chemistry, physics, materials science, and beyond.

IBM Quantum System One

Originally constructed as a chapel in 1933, the Voorhees Center is a testament to the institute’s commitment to innovation and repurposing. Its ornate granite surfaces and magnificent stained-glass windows provide a fitting backdrop for the cutting-edge technology housed within. Former RPI president George Low once dubbed it “the most unique computing center in the world.”.

The installation of the IBM Quantum System One at RPI adds to the growing global network of IBM Quantum systems deployed at research institutions. Recognizing the collaborative nature of quantum advancement, IBM continues to expand its partnerships with organizations worldwide. This initiative aims to foster a community of scientists dedicated to pushing the boundaries of quantum computing.

As RPI embraces this groundbreaking technology, it not only opens new avenues for research but also underscores the institute’s commitment to preparing the next generation of quantum workforce.
