“Son of a Critch,” a comedy series set in 1980s Newfoundland, is now streaming on Lionsgate Play. Created by comedian Mark Critch and writer Tim McAuliffe, the show offers a mix of humor and heartfelt moments, bringing to life Critch’s childhood experiences.

Based on Critch’s memoir, the series follows young Mark (played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) as he navigates junior high with a sharp wit that sometimes gets him into trouble. His mother Mary (Claire Rankin) provides tough love, while his older brother Mike Jr. (Colton Gobbo) and his straightforward grandfather (Malcolm McDowell) offer their own guidance.

Beyond the comedy, the series explores themes of family, acceptance, and resilience. It highlights the ups and downs of growing up in a small town, including struggles with bullying and finding one’s place in the world.

Critch, who narrates the series and plays his own father, shared his thoughts on the experience. “It’s interesting because and fascinating to relive my own life from a new perspective. Like you’re writing it, then you’re in pre-production, then you’re actually filming it, and then a couple of times you kind of forget it’s about you in a way,” he said.

He also reflected on playing his father. “I have these memories that I put in the show that are important enough that I put them in a show. And memory is a very personal thing. It can be a selfish thing.”

With its mix of humor and nostalgia, “Son of a Critch” offers a unique take on the coming-of-age genre. Viewers can catch the series on Lionsgate Play.
