Tech giant IBM and Korea Quantum Computing (KQC) have teamed up to bring WatsonX, IBM’s cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) software, and quantum computing services to Korea.
Under this collaboration, KQC’s ecosystem users gain access to IBM’s comprehensive AI solution, which includes watsonX, an AI and data platform designed for training, tuning, and deploying advanced AI models for enterprises.
The quantum computing partnership between KQC and IBM, which began in 2022 as the IBM Quantum Innovation Center, is set to expand further. KQC will continue to offer cloud-based access to IBM’s global fleet of utility-scale quantum systems. There are also plans to install an IBM Quantum System Two on-site at KQC’s facility in Busan, South Korea by 2028.

“Our robust hardware computing resources and core software in quantum and AI are poised not only to meet the growing demand for high-performance computing, but also to catalyze industry utilization and ecosystem development,” said Ji Hoon Kweon, chair of KQC. “We are working to diligently enhance services and infrastructure through this collaboration as well as with our industry-specific partners.”
Powering AI research
Also part of the collaboration is an investment in infrastructure to support the development and deployment of generative AI (GenAI). This includes advanced GPUs and IBM’s Artificial Intelligence Unit (AIU), managed with Red Hat OpenShift to provide a cloud-native environment. The collaboration aims to offer state-of-the-art hardware for powering AI research and business opportunities.

“With this engagement, KQC clients will have the ability to train, fine-tune, and deploy advanced AI models, using IBM Watsonx and advanced AI infrastructure,” said Darío Gil, IBM SVP and director of Research.
KQC clients will also have access to Red Hat OpenShift AI for management and runtime needs, along with IBM’s WatsonX platform, enabling the deployment of generative AI and the next wave of computing technology. The collaboration extends beyond IBM, with KQC actively engaging in quantum research collaborations with leading Korean organizations in financial, bio-healthcare, and pharmaceutical industries.
In addition to IBM, KQC is also collaborating with other Korean organizations on contributions to the country’s quantum computing ecosystem.
