Meta revealed plans to extend the operating system powering its Meta Quest devices to third-party hardware manufacturers, aiming to foster a more expansive ecosystem for developers and offer increased choices for consumers.

This initiative marks the culmination of over a decade of investment in the foundational technologies underpinning mixed reality experiences. By opening up its operating system, Meta aims to democratize access to mixed reality, ensuring that a broader audience can benefit from its technological advancements.

“We believe a more open ecosystem is the best way to bring the power of mixed reality to as many people as possible,” Meta said in its blog post. “Developers will have a much larger range of hardware that can run their apps, and more device makers will expand their market to a wider range of users, much like we’ve seen with PCs and smartphones.”
