YouTube implements disclosure labels for videos using generative AI

In response to the escalating concerns over misinformation facilitated by generative AI in content creation, YouTube has announced the implementation of disclosure labels within its Creator Studio. These labels provide transparency between content creators and their audiences.

The newly integrated tool, housed within Creator Studio, mandates creators to divulge when realistic content, which could be misconstrued as authentic, is produced using altered or synthetic media, including generative AI.

Examples of content requiring disclosure encompass manipulating the likeness of individuals, altering real events or locations, and fabricating realistic scenes depicting fictional major events.

These disclosure labels will be prominently displayed in the expanded description and within the video player itself, particularly for sensitive topics like health or news. The rollout across all YouTube platforms is expected to occur gradually over the upcoming weeks, ensuring consistency and clarity for viewers.

Google and YouTube acknowledge the need for viewers to differentiate between altered or synthetic content and genuine material. This initiative underscores the companies’ commitment to responsible AI innovation, building upon the disclosure requirements and labels announced previously in November.

Trust and accountability

Google recognizes that generative AI serves legitimate purposes in the creative process, such as script generation or productivity enhancement, where disclosure may not be necessary.

In collaboration with industry partners, Google actively contributes to initiatives promoting trust and accountability in online content, including its involvement as a steering member of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA).

Google is developing an updated privacy process to address requests for the removal of AI-generated or synthetic content that simulates identifiable individuals. This global initiative emphasizes Google’s dedication to safeguarding user privacy and preserving the integrity of its platforms.
